For Love of “Country”
Remember how you feel when you hug someone you love? That burn in your heart that you feel when that hug reaches it’s climax and the desire for it to never end when you know it’s ending.
Remember how you feel when you protect those around you that you love? How you pull your kids closer as you cross a busy intersection shielding him or her from oncoming traffic (when you have the right of way); How you feel pain in your heart when you see someone you love being hurt in any way and you want to jump in and help.
Remember how you felt the day you said the words, “I do.” As you commit to your significant other that you will be with them forever… Until death do you part?
Remember how much love you feel when it’s Mother’s Day and you wake up thinking of Mom. Wondering just how you will wow her this year, since you always try to top last year.
Now imagine all of that GONE.
This type of love and family is what often defines illegal immigrants in the Unites States who come here with the sense of ownership and pride in things that they’ve never had and dream of having. The American Dream. For Real. This is the kind of love and humanity that 400 illegal workers arrested last week for doing jobs that most Americans would NOT do – even though most White and Blue Collar Americans are always complaining about jobs being sent overseas, many even making sure our politician’s on a certain side of that neverending issue.
Perhaps this is the kind of love that is lost on company owners when they decide to have “La Migra” come on in and take illegal workers. I mean, consider that just before the arrests on May 12th, the workers were trying to do the most American thing workers can do in the United States – they were trying to unionize. I guess Unions are only good for White and Blue Collar workers, but if Pedro stands up for his rights and to defend his sub-par wage, which he uses to support his family here and abroad, then bring in “La Migra.” And shut up Pedro.
So, let me ask this? Where any of the Managers of the company arrested? Or are they exempt under the same Federal rules that make it possible for Homeland Security to break up families and send several 100 immigrants back to less than par conditions? As if they will not try to come back? Were ANY of the Managers arrested for ILLEGALLY EMPLOYING the workers? Since it is illegal to employe illegal immigrants? Isn’t it?
So, when you think of love, family and sacrifice for these things, what do you think about?
Consider this from and editorial over at the Post-Bulletin:
If even half of the allegations about what was going on inside a meat-packing plant in Postville, Iowa, are true, then we soon should be hearing about arrests of some white-collar employees, too.
Sixteen-hour shifts. Thirteen-year-olds working on the line. Workers being beaten with meat hooks. Supervisors explaining how workers should falsify their documents.
And now, with nearly 400 workers arrested and facing a choice between prison or deportation, innocent children are suffering and an entire community is in distress.
It’s easy to sit back and say “They came here illegally, so they’re getting what they deserve.” But in America, human beings aren’t supposed to be treated like animals. This is the 21st century, not the 19th.
But until we achieve comprehensive immigration reform, it’s likely that we’ll continue to see communities ripped apart. And every time it happens, we should be reminded that real immigration reform won’t only serve to keep foreign workers out — it will protect the basic human rights of immigrants who will continue to play a significant role in our nation’s economic well-being.
And then wonder how those deported workers feel about the very things we take for granted.
