So? Did the Debate Help?

As we were all glued to the tube on Wednesday night I know that most of us were considering if the Debate would help either candidate increase their likeability or throw them into a downward spiral so powerful that it would likely end the campaign for someone. As the Debate began we all wondered what the first question would be and I am sure none of us were suprised that the first 50 minutes or so of the debate of the debate were around Obama’s acquaintances.

It seemed as though for the first 50 minutes of the Debate on Wednesday Obama was under some form of super strict judicial scrutiny the likes of which no Supreme Court Justice has ever exacted on any case. From my point of view it seemed like the venerable ABC News team that moderated the debate Charlie Gibson and George Stephanopoulos spent most of that beginning trying to get Obama to simply say something like, “Yeah, you know, I had heard the Reverend once say that we should hate America and burn the White House and smoke weed until the days go by, and I totally agreed with him. I remember asking him if he had any weed on him at the time.”

Why did Charlie and George spend so much time on trivial questions and trying to cull information from where information was no longer available? Why did it seem like Obama had to speak less than Hillary only because he was trying to say as little as needed in trying to answer questions that have been answered time and again for the past 2-3 months? Was it a debate between two presidential candidates? Or was it simply some ABC ploy to position one candidate above the other?

Could George still be in the Clinton camp even after he resigned back in 1996? I mean he did leave a little bitter, right? And I don’t know about Charlie and his position on things, but let’s be a little fair here also. Obama, though he did a phenomenal job of defending himself and stating his questions in what seemed a truthful manner, did not, at least, in my opinion, stand up when he needed to. There were just 1 or 2 times during the debate that he may have wanted to turn the volume up just a little bit, and perhaps take some of the spotlight rather than being under a flood lamp.

Hillary’s performance, was well, typical of Hillary. She spent as much time as possible trying to remind everyone that she’s a world traveled “leader” and that she’s been to 80 countries and that she has all this experience. Well, did anyone wonder just how much experience she had during the years BEFORE she actually entered public service? Okay, okay, okay, so she was the First Lady for 8 years, and was First Lady of Arkansas before that, but does that qualify her and “stretch” her experience to include the years when she just may have been simply baking cookies at home?

It’s a shame the debate wasn’t a REAL debate, like the ones we had back in High School or College where substantial questions were asked and you simply had a certain amount of time to answer. Maybe the debates will get better when they are between the final two Presidential hopefuls.
