Obama or Hillary? And Just Exactly Why?

So, I had an interesting conversation today with some female colleagues at work on just exactly why I like Obama over Hillary – they were all Hillary supporters. The question was an interesting one because it wasn’t a direct, “Why do you like him?” question more so than it was a SELL him to us request. They wanted me to tell them why they SHOULD vote for Obama, or why they should be interested.

One of them, a New Yorker, graduated with a Degree in Political Science – though not hailing from the finest school on earth, my Alma Mater, Queens College (CUNY). The others were not studied in the fine art of Politics.

Before I started speaking about Obama I asked them one question to determine just what I was about to get into. I asked, “What interests you about Hillary? Why would you vote for her?” And the answers ranged from Women in Power Rock! to she’s the most qualified for the job since she spent the most time in Government – which was an interesting statement, because of the experience she really does have.

I nicely reminded them that Clinton’s been a Senator for less time than Obama, though, yes, technically, she was in “Government” as First Lady for 2 terms with her hubby Bill, but I begged the thought, “Does that make her more qualified?” I also reminded them that she was a resident of Little Rock until the day she decided she was going to run for a Senate seat, at which point she decided that the best place for her to run was New York (if I remember correctly she could not run in Arkanse) and thus created her residency there – she hadn’t lived a day in her life in New York.

I tried to explain that Obama is a charismatic, potentially just as pragmatic as me, candidate with his eye set on trying to make the best of the Presidency rather than just returning favors – which Hillary’s racking up left and right as she runs through the corridors of power. I’m sure Obama has his share of favors to return as well, but he just seems more squeaky clean to me. I explained that I like his posture on many issues, while Hillary seems to flip-flop like Flipper on the issues changing her stance slightly as it suits her, and that she ultimately goes with the majority or what her pollsters tell her she should do. I tried explaining how Obama reminded me of John F. Kennedy, even if I wasn’t alive back then, and that I wish he wouldn’t suffer the same fate. Obama’s also got that soft side to him and he is winning over the masses because of his outlook on the future and how he believes that it is time for true change in America. Obama speaks from the heart, while Hillary speaks from the pulpit. And the conversation continued for some time on a variety of topics.

Ultimately I explained that I was a Hillary supporter until just about the end of last year when she lost all my support, I’ve even asked her campaign to stop sending me e-mail, and I’ve removed her Bumper Sticker from my wall, etc., because she showed her true colors when she started bashing Obama on the issues - when she’s as unclear as anyone else on her position on things. Yeah, yeah, yeah, so she has been this “huge” supporter of Health Care Reform in the United States, etc., but has she ever materially done anything for Health Care? Materially?

Ever since the day I switched to the Obama camp, and jumped on the Bandwagon that many of you have jumped on as well, I’ve noticed an increase in rhetoric out of Clinton’s mouth while Obama seems to lash out only when necessary – why is that? He doesn’t need to go negative, that’s why, at least not yet. He will I am sure, but it will all be in response to Hillary and her machine trying to make him out to be the worse choice we could ever make.

Does anyone wonder just WHY she looses Superdelegates all the time? Yeah, okay, she gained 3 today, but where does that leave her mathematically? Obama picked up 1 Superdelegate today.

I thought about the conversation for some hours afterwards, and though I don’t believe I sold Obama to my friends – Hillary supporters, remember? - I think they just need to look at the facts, to agree with me. And just what are the facts? Well…

Obama supports amnesty for Illegal Immigrants, has little Foreign Affairs Experience, is against Gay Marriage, is Pro-Choice on Abortion, supports the U.S. Patriot Act, and yes, admits to having inhaled Marijuana once (probably more than once), and maybe even snorted some coke.

Hillary supports amnesty for Illegal Immigrants, has the Foreign Affairs Experience of a well travelled First Lady, supports Gay Marriage, is Pro-Choice on Abortion (surprise, surprise), supports the U.S. Patriot Act, and has never admitted to having inhaled Marijuana (though I imagine she has… I mean let’s remember Bill).

If that isn’t enough of an overview then I will ask my friends, which I am certain will be reading this post soon, to please read more on the Candidate’s and their positions as well a summary of their voting history by visiting YourNextPresident.net and drilling down on each candidate, including our buddy John McCain.
